It is with great sadness that the The National Federation of Fishmongers announce that Ray Sandy's, who recently retired as the chairman of the LFPRA, has passed away. Ray was a tireless supporter of the NFF and will be dearly missed. 'Not only was he one of the most kind and generous men, Ray was probably the best fish salesman I have ever had the pleasure to work with' John Sullivan, Past President NFF.

Our condolences and best wishes go his family at this time

Ray Sandy

The Seafood School, together with the London Fish & Poultry Retailers Association are now offering a free (subject to agreed funding) introductory seminar to anyone who wants to get into the trade and become a fishmonger. Fishmongering can be exciting and rewarding; however access into the business lacks a formal training route. This course is aimed at people who are not currently in the trade and is designed as a taster into the Seafood Industry. The day is also for people who are looking at setting up their own seafood business or for small businesses who would like to develop their staff.

This course is sponsored by Fishmongers' Company and City & Guilds. The course is delivered over 2 days and is free.
As there are so many applicants for these assisted places a deposit of £300 is requested which is refundable on completion of the course and associated paperwork.
This 2 day course offers an opportunity to gain valuable experience and knowledge about various areas of the industry. Day 1 focuses on cutting fish and Day 2 on the cooking and selling of fish.
An experienced blockman trainer leads the course and there is an assessment of each candidate during the practical session.  Expect an intense course with plenty of fish preparation on day one with quality assessment lectures. On day two there will be a market visit and further lectures. The majority of the rest of the day is spent in the kitchen with chefs who will inspire and demonstrate a selection of cooking methods and discuss the health benefits of eating fish and shellfish.

Ray Sandy's retires as Chairman of the London Fish and Poultry Retailer's Association

At this weeks AGM of The London Fish and Poultry Retail Association, held at Billingsgate Market on Monday 9th January, Mr Ray Sandy's announced his retirement as Chairman after 6 years in the post.
Ray went on to propose the new chairman, Mr Rex Goldsmith of Chelsea Fisheries, London, Rex will be supported by Mr John Purkiss, of W. Purkiss & Sons which is in Crouch End, London, as vice chairman.
Ray worked tirelessly with the L.F.P.R.A, both as an active member and latterly chairman over the years with his fellow council members, tackling many of the issues that are associated with Billingsgate Market, which is so important to the London Membership, Ray also supported the Craftsmanship Competition where he was "Salesman of the Year" for over seventeen years when he auctioned the fish off at the end of our Craftsmanship Competition, at Hays Galleria in London.

The National Federation of Fishmongers would like to thank Ray for all his support and would also like to welcome his successors, who we will hopefully see at the Annual General Meeting which is scheduled to be held at Fishmongers Hall in late January.
